Ascribed ("Ascribed," "we," "us," or "our") is a prayer journaling app operated by Ascribed Apps LLC. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app handles, where that information lives, and the choices you have.
We built Ascribed to help you recognize and return adoration to God through prayer. We designed it, from the ground up, to keep your prayer life private. Most of what you write never touches our servers at all.

We know most people don't read privacy policies, so here is the heart of it in plain language:

Ascribed is intended for people 13 years of age and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us information, contact us at support@ascribed.app and we will address it.
Understanding where your data is stored is the most important part of this policy, because Ascribed is unusual: we deliberately keep your personal prayer data out of our own systems.
Your personal prayers, journal entries, answered-prayer records, and adoration entries are stored in your own personal cloud account — Apple iCloud if you use an iPhone, or Google Drive if you use an Android device. This data syncs between your own devices through your own cloud account.
Ascribed Apps LLC does not store this data on its servers and cannot read it. Your personal prayer content is between you and your cloud provider (Apple or Google), governed by their terms and privacy policies.
Confession trackers and any "Letters to God" you write within them are stored only on your device, in encrypted storage. This data:
We built Confession this way on purpose. What you bring there is between you and God, and we made it technically impossible for that content to leave your phone.
Prayer Circles are the one part of Ascribed that is shared and server-stored. When you create or join a Circle and post a prayer to it, that shared prayer content is stored in Google Firebase (Firestore) so that the members of your Circle can see it and pray with you.
Anything you choose to share in a Circle is visible to the other members of that Circle. Please share thoughtfully. Shared prayer titles and content are treated as sensitive information, but they are, by nature, visible to the people in your Circle.
To create an account, you sign in with Apple, Google, or an email address and password. This is handled through Google Firebase Authentication. Depending on your sign-in method, this may include your email address and a unique account identifier. We use this only to sign you in and to associate your Circles and subscription with your account.
If you purchase an Ascribed subscription, the purchase itself is processed by Apple or Google (we never see or store your payment card details). We use RevenueCat to manage subscription status — RevenueCat receives a user identifier and information about your purchase and subscription state so the app knows whether premium features are active.

When you use these features, the relevant prayer text is sent, through our secure server, to Anthropic to generate the suggestion or categorization. Two commitments about this:

Ascribed and the services it relies on are based in the United States, and information is processed there. If you use Ascribed from outside the United States, you understand that your information is processed in the U.S., which may have different data-protection rules than your location.
If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA) gives you certain rights regarding your personal information. Because of how Ascribed is built, several of these are simple:

We use reasonable technical measures to protect information, including encryption of Confession data on your device and secure connections for data in transit. No method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure, but we designed Ascribed to minimize the personal data we hold in the first place — the strongest protection is that most of your data never reaches us.
Ascribed is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. See the age section above.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify you within the app. Your continued use of Ascribed after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
